Behind the Scenes Fight for the Berlin Wall Speech

Twenty-two years ago President Reagan's speechwriters were called together by Chief Speechwriter Tony Dolan. It was a meeting that was to have enormous consequences. The five of us considered ourselves the Musketeers of the White House, protecting the crown jewels which were the ideals and principles of President Reagan himself. Fellow speechwriter Peter Robinson had just returned from Europe where he had been part of the advance team for President Reagan's upcoming visit to the continent. Peter… Continue

Upholding the U.S. Constitution, Even when it's not Politically Expedient to do so.

Tom Delay and others had their careers destroyed because of accusations and not convictions of wrongdoing. Whether it’s Charlie Rangel or Tom Delay or Joe McDade (who had to give up a lifetime of seniority because he was indicted by a politically-motivated prosecutor. . . later to be found totally innocent of all charges, but the damage was done, his career was over), they should not be punished until they are found guilty of a crime. Punishing a leader who has only been accused of wrongdoing (n… Continue

Thumbs Down to Changing California’s Primary Election Rules.

Do we really want to change our primary election system so that in the general election many voters will only be able to choose between two people of the same party? Apparently Former California Secretary of State Bruce McPherson, an advocate of such changes, thinks so. He may represent powerful interests who want to manipulate primary voting in California, but he doesn’t represent the interests of Republicans or California voters in general. The so-called "Open Primary" is false labeling that i… Continue

Bailout Rip-offs

If a company has been so mismanaged that it has been given a taxpayer bailout in order to survive, taking the loot away from corporate executives who've had the chutzpah to give themselves $millions is the right thing to do no matter how it is collected. I would prefer the approach legislation that I have authored takes, which is to require the return to the company of all bonuses given to its executives as a prerequisite to any taxpayer bailout money being awarded to that company. We can not pe… Continue

The Only Way We Can Win in Afghanistan

We must build up the strength and role of indigenous forces in our drive for victory in Afghanistan and deliver on the promises we made to the Afghans decades ago when their fierce resistance, with our aid, led to the signal defeat of Soviet forces and helped end the Cold War.

But policy flaws, rather like those that turned liberation into quagmire in Iraq, may well undermine our renewed efforts in Afghanistan as President Obama shifts the U.S. focus away from Iraq. We need to recognize that “b… Continue

Thanks! I hope you find the house you need. Haven't heard of one yet. I always like the Park Ave and Pine Ave streets. That is a neat area too. Diane

Re: Port of Los Angeles and DHS

DHS shouldn't need to go far to learn about how to avoid trusting an avowed enemy with key elements of our Nations' security.

Sounds like a wholesale realignment is in order, but is this the time to do it? Most recent political appointments have sickened me. (Just a personal comment.)
